CHAPTER 17
It was evening. Prince Janis sat in his throne room upon the throne of Lampour. He watched the suns set through the windows of his Great Hall. Casually, he fed Altion from a bucket of salted vermin that sat behind his throne. The great winged serpent ate from the pail gladly and was wrapped around a golden perch that sat near the throne. Prince Janis wiped his hands and took out his snuffbox. He looked around the throne room, making sure he was alone. Then he quickly took a pinch of the grainy, green powder from the box and deposited it up his nose. The thrill of the drug enveloped him as he sat upon his throne. The drug, a Lampourian delicacy called Morose, was said to have the feeling of ten massive ejaculations. Though it was legal throughout Acara, Prince Janis still did not want anyone to know he partook of such a delicious diversion. Though his family had become rulers of Lampour, and one of the richest Monarchies because of their cultivation of the aphrodisiac substance, Prince Janis still felt odd about anyone knowing he was dependent on the delicacy.
Filled with sexual bravado, Prince Janis fell back upon the comfort of his throne. For a second, he forgot about how much he disliked Lampour and he longed for a life outside of its salty limits. The feel of the drug was about to subside and he was going to take another dose when his trusted spy, Greson, entered the royal chamber. Greason was a tall, lanky, dark-skinned man, who wore the badges of the royal family of Lampour. Prince Janis quickly tucked his snuff box back into his milk white robes and wiped his nose when he was Greson. He sat up prominently on his throne and waved his man servant forward. Greson quickly came down the aisle to his monarch and bowed.
âMy Lord,â Greson began. âI have the information that you requested about the rebels and the lost High Prince.â
âYou have done well, Greson,â Prince Janis smiled, stifling a sneeze. âNow let me know what you have find out.â
âThey have docked secretly in the coves. They have sent emissaries into the city to purchase mounts, supplies, and a wagon. I believe that they will wait for nightfall and try to move through the City. Once they leave Lampour, I have no idea where they intend to go, but I do believe that they seek to go further East.â
Prince Janis smiled to himself as he thought about what Greson had presented to him. It gave him an instant idea about how he was going to confront them. Prince Janis reached down and fed Altion once again. He knew that there was only one way for them to get out of the city if they were truly proceeding East. He would post Altion there and his most trusted servant would let him know when they were coming and he would be there to meet them, in one form or another.
